Complicating the Narratives β€” Moving Beyond Us vs. Them

Our Depolarization Strategies training focuses on the four pillars of the Complicating the Narratives method, designed by High Conflict author and journalist Amanda Ripley and her Good Conflict colleague Hélène Biandudi Hofer.

The strategies were born from researching conflict mediation psychology studies β€” how people actually behave when they're feeling suspicious and threatened by the other side β€” and distilling lessons journalists can use to improve coverage of contentious issues.

Originally designed for journalists covering contentious issues, these tools have applications across many types of reporting β€” and far beyond the journalism field. We usually train groups (newsrooms, classrooms and leadership cohorts), but this training will be open to all interested individuals, including some non-journalists looking for tools for deeper listening and effective communication strategies during polarizing times.

News Ambassadors (www.newsambassadors.org) Β· See you Tuesday, March 10 at 7 PM ET!

Trainings are offered on a sliding scale basis, with a requested donation in support of News Ambassadors' work bringing these important tools to more aspiring journalists and others. All funds collected help us bring this training to more journalism schools and newsrooms that might not otherwise be able to afford it β€” so trainees learn tools they can apply to their work and lives today, while helping equip the next generation of emerging journalists with strategies to tell stronger stories of "we."

About your trainer: Shia Levitt is a longtime public radio journalist and journalism educator. She directs News Ambassadors, a project that enlists college journalists to help local newsrooms fill gaps in coverage of underreported communities, specifically with stories informed by Solutions Journalism, depolarization strategies and community-responsive reporting. She is an accredited trainer of both Solutions Journalism and the depolarization reporting strategy Complicating the Narratives.
